题目Issue “Some people believe that universities should require every studentto take a variety of courses outside the student's field of study. Othersbelieve that universities should not force students to take any courses otherthan those that will help prepare them for jobs in their chosen fields.”
One of the complex and controversial issuesthat are common to everyone nowadays is that how the professors in universitiesshould design the structure of courses requirement. As to whether requiregeneral courses that are outside the students’ major fields, different peoplehold different views because of not only their distinct backgrounds but alsotheir alien understandings. Some of them agree that students should be requiredto take courses that irrelevant to their majors. While others concern thatstudents should specialize in their majors thus have no need to study other irrelativecourses. As far as I am concerned, I tend to agree that universities shouldopen many general courses that require students to select, which are less relevantto their major courses. My views can be greatly substantiated by the followingdiscussions. First and foremost argument that I havechosen to develop my idea is that students who only specialize to their ownfield of study but know nothing about others cannot survive after their graduations. Both common sense and our experience inform us that it is impossible to isolatea career without being connected to other fields. In other words, the world hasbeen interconnected and no isolated jobs would be offered. Take a good exampleas illustration. Advertising Executive is required not only be insightful ofart works, but also is preferred to has I.T. background about handling withsome software, namely Photoshop and Microsoft Office. Thus, to expect studentsto be more competitive in the near future, universities should arrange andrequire general courses. In addition, another premier reason, whichis not too far to seek is that general courses are covered basic knowledge thatwould be commonly used in daily life, which would help students to develop to bewhole persons. Because many courses are not only teach students in respect oftheoretic knowledge but also teach them how to be a responsible citizens or howto get along with group mates in teamwork, for example, the Applied EthicsCourse teach us the codes of ethics thus help us to be a moral man. Hence, another important aspect is that a whole person requires some general knowledgethat shared by every people. To sum up, although the title statementstill arouses disagreement among different people, taking into account theabove mentioned reasons, we may be comfortable to reach the conclusion that universitiesshould require students to study general courses that outside their major ones. 对任何意见表示感谢!愿共好!
