129. College students should base their choice of a field of study on the availability of jobs in that field.
Write a response in which you discuss the extent to which you agree or disagree with the recommendation and explain your reasoning for the position you take. In developing and supporting your position, describe specific circumstances in which adopting the recommendation would or would not be advantageous and explain how these examples shape your position.

-----------------------
The recommendation provided states that college students have to choose the subject according to the market demands. Although college is a liberal place for students to explore their interests and future developments, it is also crucial that they look one step forward to the job market and plan ahead. Not only is it an important decision making practice for college students to cope their choices with the market trend, but also is it a beneficial step for them to see a larger world. Standing on the point of a practical person, I agree with the recommendation. Yet, I argue that students should not choose their subject too early, instead they should be given chance to explore and to develop their abilities before they finally can see clearly what the market needs and what they really like.

The choice between the dream jobs and the jobs that are available is always a dilemma for many people even after they have achieved their career peak. To college students, this is, on the contrary, an easier decision. After all, they have not dived into the world and they have plenty of time to prepare. The sunk cost is low, so it is the, probably best, time to decide where to pursue a life achievement. If a student has not established an interest, then it is a very practical and sound strategy to research into the market and then decide where to go. At least, there are career centers and undergraduate advisers that can help them to explore and decide. If s/he has already had an interest, looking into the market does not hurt for him/her to find an ultimate, probably better, choice of career. For example, if a student is in an engineering program, and s/he is in the Bay Area of California, s/he will see that her/his friends, parents, and news are filled with I.T. news in 2012. Luckily, s/he does not need to make much effort to know how hot I.T. is in the market. As a result, if s/he does not have an interest yet, taking CS classes would not hurt for him/her to get a promising future. If s/he is interested in medical device, for example, s/he can still take plenty of CS classes as elective, in case that his/her interest does not take her further into career. In terms of make a living, this might be a better choice than taking, say, painting classes, which s/he also is interested in. Given time, getting connected with the market trend and exploring as much as possible can provide students chance to successfully step into the future career.

Now that the market trend has been explored and chosen, is there any chance of backfire? There are several pitfalls that could faultily lead students into a bad field. First of all, a student should choose a job that makes him/her happy. There is an example. An International Olympic Chemistry Gold Medal recipient ended his life after 12 years with Paypal Inc., a company with relaxing working environment. Although he earned a respectable life, he is not happy doing it, and he lead himself to a pathetic life. Secondly, one should decide whether s/he could survive in the "Market selected" field. If a student major in English would like to become a quantitative analyst in an investing bank, and s/he is not a math person, her/his choice is again very bad. This is an extreme case, but we can see a lot of such cases in companies, where people are doing a "wrong" job. Had they chosen more carefully what they would like to do in their college, their life quality could have been improved tremendously. Another pitfall is that the market is fluctuating. For instance, if that student in the Bay Area were back in 2000, then s/he probably would not have found a job when they graduated in the bubble collapse. Thus, a good knowledge of the market itself is also significant.

In summary, it is definitely a good choice for college students to follow the market trend to choose their study field, as long as they have enough knowledge about that field, they are capable of the jobs in that field, and they feel happy about doing those jobs.
