Argu 33
In this argument, the arguer employs evidences concerning the energy efficient of home appliances, new technology of home heating and surveys about home owners, to conclude that construction of new generating plants will not be necessary. We may accept part of the writer’s claims regarding whether to construct new electricity generating plants. However, lacking more accurate information and basing on uncertain assumptions, from logical prospective, the conclusion in this memorandum about the need of a new generating plant is not sound.
In the first place, the writer uses several recent surveys to point out that home owners are increasingly eager to conserve energy. Yet, it is true the description of these surveys is so vague that the claim is not cogent. Unless the surveyors sampled a sufficient number of local residents randomly and the surveyors’ neutrality bears no dispute, the surveys’ results are not reliable. And in this memorandum, the arguer dose not provide how many home owners eager to conserve energy and what proportion.
In the second place, even if the results of the surveys are convictive, the arguer’s assumptions about home appliances and home heating technology are unconvincing. In the beginning, the arguer assumes that recently the use level of home appliances are almost equal to level ten years ago. But with social progress and economic development, maybe the use level of home appliances are dramatically increasing recent decades. Additionally, the arguer assumes that the home owners eager to exchange their old appliances to the new energy efficient ones. Finally, the arguer assumes that householders will upgrade their house with the new technologies for better home insulation and passive solar heating no matter the house was building ten years ago or this insulation material and solar heating equipment are expensive.
Furthermore, without any study, the author assumes that the energy need of other fields such as commercial power, public power, did not increase.
In conclusion, to persuade the electric power company not to building a new generating plants, the arguer should be make all assumptions above sound. And several forceful surveys should be provided to prove the total demand of electricity, including residential electricity consumption, commercial power, public power and any other needs of electricity, will be not increase. |
