A History of Knowledge: Past, Present, and Future
Charles Van Doren

Reason:
#1 good materials for issue, e.g topics about technology and education;
#2 Background for reading comprehension. I read "Thomas Jefferson and the revolution of 1776". It gave background to link "Declaration of Independence " in US back to the previous law cases in England where people seek property protection .... I took GRE last Dec in US, and one reading was to discuss such a comparison.
