To establish numerical comparability between groups with countable members, the phrase as many as is preferable. Choice D, however, uses this phrase improperly in comparing eight million people to enrollment, not to other people. The comparison in E, the best choice, is logical because people is understood as the subject of are enrolled.

OG的意思是这三种说法中“相等”的意思比较宽泛，可以指不仅仅是数量上的精确相等。

hi,我的理解是这样的：

8 million people, about as    many    as    are    enrolled    in 。。。
补全后的形式为：as    many (people)    as    are    enrolled    in
所谓比较应该是：去掉两个as后仍然是个完整的句子：people are enrolled in....
所以原句并没有省略，是一个完整结构。请参考下面摘自longman电子字典的句子：
There was division among the Roman catholic episcopate as well and as many favoured the system as were against it.     划线部分去掉比较后为两完整句子：
people    favoured the system
people were against it

不知我有没有说清楚，请指正

这题没有明白：OG里经常有要求补出主语，否则认为是比较对象不对等。为什么到这儿就成了省略主语，而不是比较对象不对等了？什么时候可以省什么时候不能省？哪位NN指点一下？

对比较句的省略一直觉得很头疼：原则都清楚，就是省略的前提是不能造成歧义。但总觉得在实际运用中，其实很难说清哪些是歧义哪些不是。

我也有与caterpillar同样的疑问。通过查《朗文英文语法》得知，在比较结构中，若主语及谓语动词及其时态均相同时，比较词之后的这部分成分可以省略，如：

This morning he was more agreeable than (he was) last night.

回到本题。OG132中省略的people在句中是介词结构中的成分而非主语，且它在比较结构as many as前后中的作用不对等（as 之后所省略的people作为引导一个句子的主语了）。是不是应该补上"the people who" 这一内容以便让as之后的部分仅作为一个名词性的成分？

另有一题与之相似，OG-198的正确答案是：Although Napoleon's army entered Russia with far more supplies than for any previous campaigns, it had provisions for only twenty-four days. 此题中是不是也需要补上those以指代than之前的supplies?如果真要补出，是补those好呢还是补with those呢？

那能否对equivalent作限定呢？

如果这样改一下是否就对了：for nearly eight million people, a sum about equivalent to that of the enrollment of the nation's four-year colleges and universities.
