1.Which of the following most logically completes the passage?

Garnet and RenCo each provide health care for their employees.Garnet pays for both testing of its employees’ cholesterol levels and treatment of high cholesterol. This policy saves Garnet money, since high cholesterol left untreated for many years leads to conditions that require very expensive treatment. However, RenCo dose not have the same financial incentive to adopt such a policy, because ______.

A.early treatment of high cholesterol dose not entirely eliminate the possibility of a stroke later in life

B.the mass media regularly feature stories encouraging people to maintain diets that are low in cholesterol

C.RenCo has significantly more employees than Garnet has

D.RenCo’s employees are unlikely to have higher cholesterol levels than Garnet’s employees

E.the avera22ge length of time an employee stays with RenCo is less than it is with Garnet

为什么d.选项不对?

GWD3-Q32:

Newspaper editorial:

In an attempt to reduce the crime rate, the governor is getting tough on criminals and making prison conditions harsher.Part of this effort has been to deny inmates the access they formerly had to college-level courses. However, this action is clearly counter to the governor’s ultimate goal, since after being released form prison, inmates who had taken such courses committed far fewer crimes overall than other inmates.

Which of the following is an assumption on which the argument depends?

A.Not being able to take college-level courses while in prison is unlikely to deter anyone from a crime that he or she might otherwise have committed.

B.Former inmates are no more likely to commit crimes than are members of the general population.

C.The group of inmates who chose to take college-level courses were not already less likely than other inmates to commit crimes after being released.

D.Taking high school level courses in prison has less effect on an inmate’s subsequent behavior than taking college-level courses does.

E.The governor’s ultimate goal actually is to gain popularity by convincing people that something effective is being done about crime.

不能理解原文与答案的逻辑,原文是说since after being released form prison, inmates who had taken such courses committed far fewer crimes overall than other inmates。所以such course 是能减少人再犯罪的,那不是与真确答案c. The group of inmates who chose to take college-level courses were not already less likely than other inmates to commit crimes after being released.所矛盾?

R does not care if its current employees will need expensive treatment for high cholestrol in the FUTURE since by that time, these employees are neither R's employee nor its concern any more.

To use layman's language, let's say R's employees only stay for 2 years, while G's employees stay for 10 years. But the treatment of high cholesterol won't start until the fifth year. R does not need to worry about its CURRENT employees' health in this respect, because by the fifth year, all these employees (and potential bills to cure their diseases) are not R's liabilities.  These employees packed and left three years ago.

Necessary assumption.  Use negation.

If you negate C, you get: The group of inmates who chose to take college-level courses WERE already less likely than other inmates to commit crimes after being released. If so, these inmates are GOOD inmates to begin with, with or without the college-level course training. In an analogy, it is like to compare the GMAT scores of college graduates with those of high school dropouts. Therefore, the argument that allowing an inmate to take such courses in prison would decrease an inmate's chance of committing crimes after his or her release is false.

Thus, C is the necessary assumption.

1. This policy saves Garnet money, since high cholesterol left untreated for many years leads to conditions that require very expensive treatment.

The group of inmates who chose to take college-level courses were already less likely than other inmates to commit crimes after being released.
