1. a total of 22 men and 26 women were at a party, and the average (arithmetic mean) age of all of the adults at the party was exactly 35years. if the average age of the men was exactly 38years, which of the following was clostest to the average age, in years, of the women?

2. from May 1 to May 30 in the same year, the balance in a checking account increased. what was the balance in the checking account on May30 ?
(1)if, druing this period of time, the increase in the balance in the checking account had been 12%, then the balance in the account on May30 would have been $504
(2)During this period of time, the increase in the balance in the checking account was 8%

3. the annual interest rate earned by an investment increased by 10% from last year to this year. if the annual interest rate earned by the investment this year was 1%, what was the annual interest rate last year.

4. of the mutual funds on a "select list", 1/3 have 5-star ratings, and 2/5 of the remaining funds have 4-star. if the remaining 300 funds on the list have 3-star, how many funds are on the list?

May 1 ballance unknown and May 30 base > May 1 ballance. Want to know May 30 ballance.
1) We don't know if the increase is or is not 12% for May, so this condition alone is not sufficent.
2) We don't know May 1 ballance. So knowing the rate alone would not help us calculating May 30 ballance. This condition alone is not sufficient.

When you combine both 1 and 2, the increase is 8%, not 12%, so the ballance is not $504. That it. We still do not known May 1 ballance. Therefore combining 1 and 2 is not sufficient, either.

This is fifth grade math.

1/3 5-star, 4/15 4-star, 2/5 3-star which is 300.

average age of the women = [35 * (22 + 26) - 38 * 26 ] / 22 = [35 * 22 -(38-35) * 26 ]
/ 22 = 35 - 39 / 11 = 31.5
