一个句子的理解---TPO6 里蒸汽机那篇第2段里黄色这句，半天没看明白。。employ ...for是词组么？which是修饰什么的呀

Paragraph 2: The source had long been known but not exploited. Early in the century, apump had come into use in which expanding steam raised a piston in a cylinder, and atmospheric pressure brought it down again when the steam condensed inside the cylinder to form a vacuum．This “atmospheric engine,”invented by Thomas Savery and vastly improved by his partner．Thomas Newcomen, embodied revolutionary principles, but it was so slow and wasteful of fuel that it could not be employed outside the coal mines for which it had been designed.

employ除了做雇佣的意思之后，还有便是利用和使用的意思。这里就是这个意思。which修饰的是紧贴在它前面的coal mines.你要提高词汇量了，童鞋！加油啊！吼吼

。。。LSS说的不是问题关键~和emply没什么关系，for是跟着最后那个design的，因为定语从句给提到whcih前了~~
