Could anybody tell me what is "so were propably without language" means? What is the complete sentense it should be? Thanks a lot.

Neanderthals 根据词面不敢肯定是否复数——但根据WERE可以得知是复数——复数后面A VOCAL 可知是NEANDERTHALS 作为集合名词表示一类，然后才跟的单数宾语并比较单数的AN APE——这样解释比较通顺吧。

但是NEANDERTHALS 既然作为集合名词主语，那么谓语WERE，就应该是单数的啊。
如果必须要求WERE和后面的WHY THEY WERE，那么前面就应该比较复数的THOSE OF THE APES了。

我不是nn, 一点个人意见，供探讨：

1，neanderthals 在这里是复数，后面的were,保持主谓一致。不太赞同”作为集合名词表示一类，要跟单数谓语“ 的解释。

2，之所以 vocal tract 要用单数，请看og解释：“It is better to use the singular in referring to an anatomical feature common to an entire species."
