Hi friends, need some help from you.

My friend just got accepted to Berkelery HAAS MBA, however, he's rejected by Stanford and HBS.
He is thinking of deferring Berkelery for 1 year to give the last try to GBS and HBS. What do you think?

Should he do this? and Anyone has experience in deferral?

Thanks!!

Unless your pal has a strong and legit reason (i.e. w/ hard evidence), he won't be able to be qualified for a deferal.

first of all, deferring one school's admission to give yourself another year to apply to other schools is really frowned  upon among admissions.  Because people have done that in the past, business schools nowadays have really tightened deferral granting.  So unless you have legitimate personal reasons, they are not going to grant it.  So if your friend wants to fake a reason and then re-apply....then I don't know what to say...it's unethical for one.

If he has the guts and determination, he can decline HAAS offer and re-apply.  But if I am in his shoe, I would take Haas without a doubt.  Brand name can only gets you so far, plus Haas is a great brand already.

The rejection reasons by H & S? If your friend has the confidence to conquer obstacles within one year after analysis of pros & cons for reapplying, why not try go? It depends on his/her expectation, in short...

Did he/she even get interviewed by H/S?  If he didn't even get interviewed by either place, it's probably because he simply lacks the kind of pedigree and background that H/S are looking for (top undergrad, job at blue chip firm, high stats, etc), and with the exception of a low GMAT score, none of those things can be fixed in a year (in reality it's really about 6 months until next application date).  For H/S, even a higher gmat score probably won't make a difference.  In short, he just lacks the H/S DNA...

Now if he was interviewed by at least one of them or was WL'd, that's another story.  Although if he was WL'd and was let go last round, odds still not good, and neither of these schools is reapplicant friendly.  Overall, I think that's pretty stupid move, but obviously feel free to disagree.
