句子的意思是，一种本来用来控制兔子数量的病毒，（in turn）反而减少了地下蚁巢，而且导致了一种靠蚁巢来掩护它后代的蝴蝶的数量的减少

因为 open ground是这样产生的——— 兔子减少了ground cover，所以产生了open ground

人家LS解释的蛮好的嘛，LZ非要把兔子和ground绕进去，多此一举。整句话根本就不是你理解的那样，你在断章取义好不好。
这个包含open ground的句子，就单从SC的角度只是一种表修饰，知道LZ再练RC的逻辑，但是你不能因为要弄因果关系，就非要人家定语表目的呀。你把定语表目的的，语义自然被你弄歪了。个人以为，热心网友提供的翻译非常到位，但是LZ后面的解释给我感觉你还在纠结兔子和ground之间的关系。
