这道题我选D，我认为it指代religious zeal，them指代military affairs。
正确答案中but后面应该是跟一个完整的句子的，而不是定语从句，选择C，我不理解

这部分是brought的宾语，这句话意思是Puritan fanatics带来了a coolness of judgment and mutability of purpose，但实际上a coolness of judgment and mutability of purpose是从it自然产生的。因为a coolness of judgment and mutability of purpose是两个东西，所以which后面跟复数。it应该是指their religious zeal。them=their指代some writers。
