to make relevant people prepared so that they won't be surprised by the phone calls(some of them may not know that I am applying) and that they will give accurate answers

to my knowledge, the background checks are usually taking place after admissions but before enrollments to verify what you said about yourself are true.

——你有这个想法就是动机不纯。他们一般是相信你的，我知道的比如清华是面试结束后，对360名考生进行大约1/10不到的抽查。
