请教阅读难句教程里序号002的解释

在杨鹏阅读难句教程里，序号002：

A desire to throw over reality a light that never

was might give way abruptly to the desire on the

 part of what we might consider a novelist-

scientist to record exactly and concretely the

structure and texture of a flower.

作者的解释是desire 的第二个修饰成分that引导的是个倒装，正确语序是that might never be given way...

我的问题是这样：如果是这样，那么倒装后的that从句应该是：that never might be given way...,而不是句子里的that never was might give way...,

如作者的解释，我读到这里就思维混乱了。

所以我就认为that never was是修饰 a light的，而might give way是 a desire的谓语，这样就觉着清楚了。
