001 Why going to college?

In my hometown, the senior year in the high school is always the most stressful. We do an copious amount of exercise, reduce our leisure time to the minimum, stay up late and get buried in millions of math equations and historical events. All we want to have in return is to get to the best college we have in mind because getting enrolled in our dream college means a lot to us.

First of all, going to the college offers us a precious opportunity to specialize in the field that fascinates us most. As we are in middle school and high school, we are required to study a wide range of subjects ranging from math to languages, from biology to physics, from history to arts. Since the time at school is unfortunately limited, we can only learn some basic principles about a certain course and there is not enough time for us to go further into the topic we find appealing. However, when in college, we have a more specific major into which we can throw all our energy and time.

Moreover, to obtain a special skill essential to our dream job is also an important reason why we spend four more years on campus. I'll take program designing as an example. If we are considering to work as a software engineer in the IT industry, we'd better make sure we have a good command of program designing, the course of which is up till now only available in college, where all the theories about computer and the Internet are taught systematically by experienced professors, and with the help of the computer lab, all the college students can have a go and check out what they have learned under the supervision of excellent computer expertise. In this way, problems can be solved directly and immediately.

Finally, the precious years we spend in college serve as a perfect transition from campus to the real working world. We not only acquire knowledge and hone our skills during the time, we accumulate valuable social experience as well. In my hometown, the most time in our adolescent years is devoted to study. Therefore, it's no easy task for us, who still know quite little about the way real world rolls, to step out of the Ivory Tower. However, college is where we can meet people coming from various cultural backgrounds and from all walks of life, which is quite different from high school, where almost everyone lives in the same neighborhood. Competing and cooperating with them is no doubt a wonderful experience, since we have to communicate effectively, take initiative to solve differences and reach consensus eventually, which improves our interpersonal skills. What's more, internship opportunity in renound corporations is easier to get because there are always long-term programs between companies and colleges. College students will find those programs beneficial as they offer undergraduates a closer look at the real work place and the insight into their future job, thus getting them well-prepared before they enter the workforce.

All in all, going to college is absolutely a wonderful and rewarding experience, offering us a brilliant opportunity to specialize in a certain field, helping us to obtain a special skill required by our dream job, and providing a perfect transition from campus to the real working world. Although it's definitely a tough patch preparing for the entrance exam required by the college, all the students who at last make it to the college will find all the efforts they've made worthwhile and be ready for the even greater challenges just ahead of them..

027 should we do things we don't enjoy?

People around me often complain to me that life is not a chain of happiness but a chain of expected and unexpected tasks they really don't enjoy. Sometimes they wish they could quit all of them. Sometimes they argue that if they just do what they find fascinating and simply skip what they hate, life will be more fun. However, I posit that we should sometimes do things that we do not enjoy.

First of all, it is often the case that the things we feel bored with are necessary for our success in both study and work. Just look back on those times when we are still at middle school or high school. We have to learn a wide range of subjects from languages to math, from physics to biology, from history to arts, and the list goes on. It can't be denied that almost all of us have preferences for one course over another. We may look forward to a critical writing course but feel frustrated performing an experiment to conform a physical theory. Things get worse when it comes to the tests at the end of every semester. Nevertheless, those subjects we show no interest in don't necessarily mean that they are of no importance. We have to make sure that we are developing in an all round way in order to hold a secure position in this increasingly competitive working world. Furthermore, it is also essential for us to do things that we don't like when we enter the ever-dynamic workforce. For instance, those who work with us come from various cultural backgrounds and all walks of life, each possessing a distinct characteristic and future expectation. We may just as well roll things as we always do and stay true to ourselves, but it may not be so wise a choice when we are still new to the company and our team. Blending into our department and communicate effectively with the team members is the prerequisite for future team work. It's without question that it takes pains trying to "look" belong, which means we have to accept their beliefs and mottos, with abandoning some of our own ones, live their principles and occasionally join their discussions about the topics we may not be so interested in. Still sometimes we have to complete our tasks with people we actually don't appreciate much, whether be due to their personality or their weird style of getting things done. Can we just walk away and quit? No. Can we put up a fight with them and complain to our supervisor? No. Or we will be called "unprofessional". It makes sense because it's nothing personal in the real jungle of business.

Moreover, sometimes we do things that fail to appeal to us simply because they are part of social obligations which all decent citizens in modern societies are expected to fulfill. Let's take some of our daily routines as examples. Before we throw our garbage into the trash bins we have to take an extra second to think about into which category they fall. We separate them according to their materials so that the materials that can be recycled will be given another life and make contributions to our life once again, and those materials with poisonous elements can be dealt with more carefully in order to protect our planet. Some people are unwilling to take the trouble because we are producing garbage every minute of our life, and anyway, we don't violate the law if skip that extra second of separating. But any decent citizen should regard his/her own responsibility to reduce pollution on our dear homeland Earth.

All in all, it's certain that all of us hope to live life according to our own likes and dislikes. But in order to do great in our study and work as well as to be an appreciated citizen, we should place personal interest and convenience on the second place. After all, this is what life is all about.
