洋洋洒洒的写了大篇PS，到Rochester家时发现人家要的是小essay。

第一篇小essay是要体现创造力

Describe two examples that demonstrate your potential as a creative and original thinker. (500 word maximum)

但是有点不明白，他家说的好抽象啊，"creative and original thinker”，这个是要举做研究的例子还是生活中其他方面的例子？

大家是怎么看的？帮帮我啊！热烈感谢！

不抽象啊，我觉得一个研究的例子一个非研究的例子是最好的搭配，就写你曾经发现过什么别人没有轻易发现的有价值的问题啊~~

我觉得这个topic出得很好啊，既能够反映创造力和critical thinking，也能间接反映了你想问题的方式和你个人价值比较看重的一些东西。

当时就随便从文章里把摘要和创新点改了下贴上去，但估计最后也是没人care的。

Rochester家的application essy就是两个小essay。还有一个好像是表达专业背景什么的一篇essay。

grade,cv,rl,papers (if you have), and the school you are in now contain all the information they need.

that is misleading...

people care about ps A LOT. If you have a great ps, that can make you stand out immediately.....All our career advisors and application advisors on campus put much emphasis on helping students produce the best ps possible...and everyone goes all way out in emphasizing the significance of a ps....and these advisors are all former admission officers...are they just misleading us? I don't believe so.

The reason that domestic students feel people don't care about ps is because very very very few Chinese applicants ever wrote outstanding ps......All our ps are THE SAME....then of course they don't matter......

So do whatever with your ps if you are really strong in all other aspects; If you are mediocre in some way, then your ps can save you....

I have been correcting ps and applicatoin essays (especailly for entering colleges) all the time, and it really makes me feel sad that chinese kids'essays just make no sense.....

Again I am not trying to offend anyone, but whenever my roommates are reading these essays with me, they burst out laughing....Do you think an admission officer will ever admit a student writing such a poor ps?

I guess people have confused two things: whether your ps is important or whether your research direction is important.

The answer for the former is a definite yes.
The answer for the latter is a little bit more complicated.
(1) Yes, in the sense that the admissions prefer students who have a deep understanding of what research is being conducted in the field. In that way, they can match students with faculty, and your description of your research interest also shows your commitment to a phd program and to research.
(2) No, in the sense that people will not punish you if you change your research interest after entering the program. It is rare actually that students do not make any changes at all. Therefore, feel free to say what you are currently interested in and feel free to change at any time.

I think PS is important to save me! Thus I need to spend time and energy to make it better!

And I also heard a lot of examples about the significance of PS. In some sense, I think PS is even more important than RL. Because it's a stage to show ourselves. Say our interest, idea about a certian realm or topic, our view of the advanced level education...

I admit that for some really strong applicants, such as the one has RL from leading professors in that area, or has strong publications, PS is not so important.

agree with 立雪!

No offense, if one get admitted with great rls, he/she may say ps is meaningless. But not everybosy has good rl. I do not believe that the admission commitee does not even have a glance at ps. If they have a glance at ps, a good ps makes sense.
