Career Plan
After get the PhD degree in USA, I will come back to China to find position as
a faculty or even assistant professor in top 10 Chinese universities. The rea
sons are: 1. It is easier to find a teaching position in top China universities than in
U.S. Competition for university position is fiercer in U.S as U.S economy decl
ining. But PhD students graduated from U.S business schools will be very welco
med, more qualified and competitive than the PhD students in China to get a fa
culty position in top China universities, especially Ph.D graduate from top 15
U.S business school. In addition, government has done many things to attract
the Ph.D students abroad to come back to do contributions in China, such as so
lve the housing problems, spouse’s job problems and children’s school proble
ms, and offer a high salary and status. But if I choose to stay in U.S, I have
to strive hard for at least another 5-10 years to get a position as professor
and even longer to buy a house. My tutor of Nanjing University ....is a good example.
He graduated from City University of Hong Kong in 2003, and
he chose to come back mainland, only 4 years later, he became the Professor an
d Academic Leader of Dept. of Marketing in Nanjing University when he was only
34 years old, and, of course, with a big house in Nanjing!
2. My research focuses on marketing strategy (branding strategy) in China. The
most valuable part in my future research will be my insight into some unique
characteristics in marketing practices in China. I am sure that I will achieve
more in my research by learning latest research methodology and topic in U.S
and apply it in China. That will be my main contribution to marketing field.
3. I will gain valuable consulting experience in marketing in China because Ch
ina enjoys the fastest economic development rate in the world. Many firms are
booming in China everyday and they need consulting. I believe I will get more
chances to gain consulting experience and field experience in marketing in Chi
na and become rich faster than in U.S. Those consulting experience is vital to
my research too.
4. Both of my hunsband and me will have better career development in China whi le taking care of our parents. I hope to find a position in marketing Dept. in Nanjing University or Xuzhou Mining University. Because both my husband and m e are the only child in our family. Nanjing University is only 3 hours to my h ometown and 2 hours to his hometown by train. So that we can visit our parents often and take care of them while have a good career. Most of my good friends and relatives are in NJ and XZ. In addition, my father has a firm selling med ical instrument and my husband also a specialist in medical instrument. My fat her hopes that my husband will take care of his firm after his retirement. And I will become a professor faster in China as most teachers in marketing in Ch ina still lack skills and trainings in quantitative analysis in marketing and consumer behavior experiment experience in consumer research, I will outperfor m them and become professor faster here.
Why go to USA?
1. Marketing originates in U.S.A. Most of the textbook in marketing in China a
re translated from U.S textbooks. Most of the modern marketing theories and mo
st updated papers are published by scholars in U.S.A.
2. To be a Professor in China, a doctor degree is necessary, and the doctor de
gree from USA will be more useful to get a good position in top 10 universitie
s in China.
Why Indiana University Bloomington?
Indiana University-Bloomington enjoys a long tradition of excellence and renow
ned reputation in marketing research. More importantly, my main research inter
ests lie in marketing capability and some renowned researchers in this field s
uch as Professor Neil A. Morgan is in Indiana University-Bloomington. I have r
ead many papers written by Dr. Morgan during my graduate study. In fact, his p
aper “Benchmarking Marketing Capabilities For Sustained Competitive Advantage
” is the most important reference of my thesis. My graduation thesis for mast
er degree and other published papers are also on marketing capability—CRM cap
ability. I hope that I can further my research in this field with Dr. Morgan i
n my Ph.D study.
In addition, I want to learn more about the experimental way of doing research
and study further on consumer behavior as universities in China have limited
research resources (teachers and labs) in this field while Kelley School of Bu
siness is good at study in this field.
Therefore I am really looking forward to pursue my Ph.D in the Kelley School o
f Business in the Indiana University-Bloomington. And I believe that the study
experiences in Indiana University-Bloomington will be rewarding in my future
research work. I also believe that I can contribute to the diversity of Indian
a University’s academic community by my previous and current research on mark
eting in Chinese business environment.
Why Marketing?

’d love to further my research in this field.
