[求助]can i change my Visa status in US

hihi. i will travel to US in May. The US Visa i have now is Tourist/Business.

Anyone know if I can change my Visa status from Tourist to Student here? i will have my offer letters or other documents with me. Can I do that in any state in US? Or should i do it in the state that I will go to school?

thanks thanks!!

no, in your case, you need to go back to China or the country you have been staying for the past 6 months to re-apply for student VISA F1

oh..thanks a lot!

Do you know around how long it takes to get a visa done?

I hope it will not be too late if I go home in mid July to get my visa done..

It's better make an appointment in advanced before you go home. Good luck!

以下是引用miatu在2008-3-20 21:09:00的发言:

two cases:

1. You had used the two-month grace period before applying for OPT, then

if your OPT is gonna expire before the starting date of study in your new I-20, you need to either go back to China or other countries, such as Canada, Mexico, etc., to reapply for the F1 visa.

2. You did not use the two-month grace period before applying for OPT, then

if your OPT is gonna expire 60 calendar days ahead of the starting date of study in your new I-20,  you need to either go back to China or other countries, such as Canada, Mexico, etc., to reapply for the F1 visa.

BTW, in either case, if you were under pressure to renew your visa, you may request the institute you are gonna pursue studies at to set up an earlier date of study. Such a request will not hold legal standing unless the authorities of the department holding the program you are gonna go for propose a written request explaining why an earlier registration date is necessary to the Office of International Students.

if you don't travel during your OPT period, you don't need to renew your visa, however, if you plan to travel, you need to renew your visa before you enter into U.S.

Thanks, Kevinleihuang & Drakedirect..

So, could I say, for example, assuming I haven't used that 2 months grace period and my OPT is gonna expire at 7/1,  as  long as my  starting date of study is ahead of 9/1 and I remain in the US, I could be fine without visa renewal, right ? Thanks...
