How strictly do you follow HBS' word limit?

It says "Please limit your responses by the lengths indicated". Is it
still ok if my essays exceed by less than 20 words? Please share your
thoughts and experiences.

They're about as strict as anyone else - in other words, they're no better at looking at an essay and saying it's 440 words vs. 400 words than anybody else is. So the same 10% rule applies, but again, as with any other school, you don't want all of your essays to be at that max. Make sure some are closer to the wordlimit if possible.

So I guess with an HBS essay, it is okay to go over and go up to about 440 with the 10% rule? I will be congnizant of word count, and try not to do that in all essays.... So is it okay if, 2-3 out of the 5 essays go over 20 words or so? Please advice.
