Program Overview
The Anderson School (Anderson) at the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA) offers a master of business administration (MBA), Executive MBA, Fully Employed MBA (FEMBA) and six concurrent degree programs.
The Anderson MBA Program
The Anderson MBA Program prepares professionals to become management leaders in today's complex global business environment. The curriculum consists of a management core and advanced electives and management field study, and provides students with a strong general management education. Faculty employ case analyses, simulations, lectures, and individual and group projects to give students a rigorous and professionally relevant learning experience.
Anderson MBA students are not required to declare a major or concentration. Instead they can take courses in several functional and specialty areas, take electives in other departments, and use management field study to gain expertise.
The eight-course management core builds the knowledge base required for further study. Advanced electives comprise two-thirds of the MBA curriculum and give flexibility and diversity to each student's program. Management field study sends teams of three to five students and a faculty adviser into client firms as strategic consultants to confront organizational and competitive problems and provide recommendations for action.
The management communications program works within the regular curriculum to enhance MBA students' oral and written skills. Lectures and exercises on communication are integrated into selected management core courses.
Concurrent Degree Programs
In cooperation with other UCLA schools and departments, Anderson offers six concurrent degree programs: four-year MBA/ JD (juris doctor), four- to six-year MBA/MD (medical doctor), three-year MBA/MCS (master of computer science), MBA/MLAS (Master of Latin American Studies), MBA/MPH (master of public health) and MBA/MUP (master of urban planning) programs.
Special Options
Students have the opportunity to take a one-week program taught by policy makers, politicians and regulatory agency personnel on the Washington Campus in Washington, DC.
The MBA Enterprise Corps consortium offers recent graduates the chance to collaborate in the management of emerging and expanding enterprises, principally in Central Europe and Southeast Asia.
The Advanced International Management Program runs concurrently with the regular MBA program. Students in this program spend several months overseas, obtaining in-depth exposure to international business practices, culture and language.

International Student Support
Anderson's student body includes 172 international students who account for over one-quarter of the MBA program enrollment and represent countries such as China, Argentina, Chile, Brazil, France, Germany, England, Taiwan, Switzerland, Spain, India, Hong Kong and Malaysia. Resources available to international students include the Dashew International Student Center (DISC) and the Office of International Students and Scholars (OISS).
The DISC offers an orientation program to help international students adjust to the university and to the community. Throughout the year, DISC organizes programs to foster friendships and create connections between UCLA's international students and the community at large.
The OISS provides personal counseling on immigration/visa issues, financial resources and tax matters, academic adjustment, insurance, and release of funds from other countries. The OISS acts as an advocate on behalf of international students, both individually and as a group, within the university and with governmental agencies.
Expenses & Financial Assistance
California residents attending UCLA pay $11,820 per academic year in tuition fees and out-of- state residents pay $22,952. Students should budget $7,300 dollars for materials, including a laptop computer, and approximately $12,500 per year for room and board.
Full-time students who are US citizens or permanent residents are eligible for need-based financial aid. Several private loans are also available.
A limited number of research and teaching assistantships are available and students may apply for these positions once they arrive on campus.
New admissions are automatically considered for dean's fellowships, based on the strength of their application. Anderson offers merit-based fellowships to second-year MBA students, on the basis of academic performance and leadership activities in their first year.
University & Location
UCLA began as the Los Angeles State Normal School, a teachers' college that became the southern branch of the University of California in 1919. UCLA is bordered by Westwood Village, Beverly Hills, Bel Air, Brentwood and Santa Monica. The 419-acre campus has more than 235 buildings with classrooms, laboratories, libraries, clinics, housing, its own police department and a power plant. The UCLA Library, with more than 6.7 million volumes, ranks among the top three university research libraries in North America. It subscribes to more than 95,000 periodicals and scholarly journals.
Campus resources include the Fowler Museum of Cultural History, Armand Hammer Museum of Art and Cultural Center, Grunwald Center for the Graphic Arts, UCLA Film and Television Archive, and the largest outdoor sculpture garden on the West Coast. The Mildred E. Mathias Botanical Garden contains thousands of species of rare and native plants and is situated in a quiet wooded corner of campus.
The second-largest city in the US, Los Angeles is a vibrant and exciting place to live and study. Los Angeles is home to numerous multibillion-dollar companies and thousands of start-up firms. Its busy port is the nation's gateway to the Pacific Rim. Beach, mountain and desert recreation areas are plentiful and the moderate climate makes outdoor activities such as tennis, skiing, biking and sailing enjoyable year-round. The Getty Center makes LA one of the largest arts centers in the world.
Admissions Criteria & Procedures
Consistently ranked as one of the most selective business schools in the US, Anderson accepts students who have been exceptional performers academically and professionally and who have been leaders on their college campuses, in the workplace and in their communities. The school limits entering classes to approximately 330 students and the selection process is highly competitive. The admissions policy emphasizes academic ability, leadership, employment history and breadth of life experiences. The committee evaluates applicants' prospects as future leaders and their projected ability to succeed in and profit from the MBA program.
Although the only specific requirement for admission is a bachelor's degree from an accredited four-year college or university, the committee seeks students who will bring unique contributions from diverse backgrounds and experiences, and collectively enrich the educational experience. Committee members consider biographical and academic background information, GMAT and TOEFL scores, achievements, awards and honors, employment history, letters of recommendation, and college and community involvement, especially where candidates have served in a leadership capacity. On occasion, candidates without work experience who have exceptional academic records and GMAT scores are admitted to the program. Prospective students must have completed university-level algebra and differential calculus.
Application for fall admission may be made from October 1 through April 5. Applicants are responsible for having GMAT and TOEFL (if applicable) scores sent directly to UCLA. Early application is recommended because admissions are made on a continuous basis and space is limited.
For concurrent degree programs, Anderson and other UCLA schools and departments make independent admission decisions. Prospective students should request separate application material from each program. Appropriate application materials should be submitted separately as well.
Admission procedures for Anderson's part-time EMBA and FEMBA programs are different and separate from the full-time MBA program. Candidates may only apply to one program in a given year.
Career Placement & Opportunities
The Anderson MBA Career Management Center's (CMC) skilled professional staff work with students to help them achieve career goals ranging from not-for-profit enterprises to Wall Street investment banking. CMC's services and resources include: 1) employer briefings that bring prominent business executives on campus to introduce students to their industries and firms; 2) the campus interview program for full-time and summer internship positions; 3) listings of positions in small- and mid-sized firms; 4) resume books that market students to employers; 5) individual counseling and advising sessions that help students define and select career alternatives, target industry or employer groups and learn effective job-search strategies; 6) career planning and placement workshops; 7) a career connection program in which second- year MBA students provide advice and guidance to first-year students; and 8) a career resource center for researching career alternatives and potential employers.
