Your Answer:
Should corporations and other business eliminate the many ranks and salary grades, as the speaker contends? I strongly disagree with this recommendation. While I concede a hierarchical structure is not as flexible as a flat one, hierarchical structure is much more likely to help the corporations enhance their productivities.
First of all, it does not accord with human nature to eliminate the ranks between employees. On the contrary, it is the hierarchical structure that render an organization more stable and under control. Different people from time to time have different opinions, which often occur in the business world. If there is not a clear authority hierarchical structure, people tend to perform according to their own belief. As a result such organization lacks the uniformity, thereby slipping into a state of chaos. Obviousl, the speaker's statement that " a flat structure is more likely to encourage collegiality and corporation among employees" is not convincing at all。
Moreover, such ranks and salary grades that classify employees according to their experience and expertise serve as an incentive which drive the employees to perform better. Common sense tells us everyone want his status raised. Provided such criteria of promotion can be made properly as the basis of one's performance, it surely can encourage people to act as what the organization requires. Therefore, the goal of the organization can be successfully fulfilled.
Admittedly, some of my contenders may point out that a hierarchical structure probably have(has) the disadvantage of a costly staff and slow reaction. However, if we considering both the detrimental effects that a flat organization bring about as described above and the positive results a proper hierarchical structure can give us such as specialization of tasks, rationalization of activities and catalyst to the performance of employees, the final decision is obvious that a hierarchical structure can contribute more to the success of an organization.
In sum, because of the above-mentioned reasons, which probably interweave into an organic whole and become more compelling, we can safely reach the conclusion that in the business world, a hierarchical structure is more suitable to the organization than is a flat one.
