C is right b/c microbial life has been found in bedrock more than five kilometers below the surface of the Earth. That means the microbial life is not on the surface of the earth.

E is not right b/c coal and oil  were originally produced from energy of sunlight. 

try to understand the meaning of the two sentences below:

Microbial life has been found in bedrock more than five kilometers below the surface of the Earth

(C)  A thorough survey of a planet's surface is insufficient to establish beyond a doubt that the planet contains no life.

they  are basically the same. Hence, C is a conclusion.

不知是否可以得到以下两点：

1. Microbial life属于life的一种；2. plant应该包括surface和below the surface。

若他们都成立；则：the plant contains life。（题干是想证明这个吗？且C选项只提到surface!）

回到原题：not all life from sunlight {= some life not from sunlight e.g.: Microbial and bacteria}。个人以为：结论中至少应该有sunlight吧！？
