topic: the mark-test.
As many people believed, the author says the Chimpamsees have possessed the “self-awareness” which as many others believed as only existed in human being.
Speaker supported her point of views in two respects which differed from what we comprehended from the Author’s.
People are very much interested in observation to animals to find out if there is something same or common in between. Nevertheless, there is big difference between the Self-awareness and the Self-recognition according to the speaker. The self-awareness is the mantel activities can be observed in humans. While the famous “mark-test”, as author mentioned, all the chimps are grouped in the cages and given a three stages test. And during the tests, the animals are given a mirror to see how they responded to it. However, those animals in test are responding to the given mirrors in an “inconsistence” manner, in other words, those animals, in the case, neither not even look at mirror, or looked at mirror too many times. On the other hand, some Chimps in the tests responded to the given mirror as same as they do to other Chimps in other cage through the window. So, as we may observe, those responding actions are only can be called self-recognition instead of the self-awareness which is repeated in an “consistence’ manner.
To sum up, those animals in the “mask-testing’ responding to the mirror is hard to concluded as have self-awareness. These actions might be other social behaviors observed happened among animals. According to the speaker’s doubts casts to the questions, and the statement from the authors was very weak in these tow respects.
