Hydrocarbons, with which fruit flies perfume themselves in species-specific blends, are known to be important in courtship, and apparently this assists flies that taste the hydrocarbons on prospective mates to distinguish their own species from that of others.

D apparently assisting flies to taste the hydrocarbons on prospective mates to distinguish their own species from those of
E apparently assisting flies that taste the hydrocarbons on prospective mates in distinguishing their own species from

Nineteenth-century doctors thought that alcohol, when ingested, passed through the stomach into the bloodstream and was broken down only by the liver; recent studies, however, have led them to conclude that the stomach breaks down up to 20 percent of ingested alcohol before it reaches the liver.

C have led doctors to conclude
E lead to the doctors` conclusion

New genetic evidence-together with recent studies of elephants' skeletons, tusks, and other anatomical features-provide compelling support for classifying Africa's forest elephants and its savanna elephants as separate species.
A provide compelling support for classifying
B provide compelling support for the classification of
C provides compelling support to the classification of
D provides compelling support for classifying
因为这道题DE的split只有for和to,所以用to修饰主语很容易能解决

第一题我觉得D错的更在于distinguish their species from those of others. others已经是species了,所以这个those没有指代,所以错。

A write a book to emphasize sth里的to应该是表目的,A为了emphasize sth去write a book
但是A lead sb to do sth   并不是 A为了to do sth去lead sb

Above two examples you should focus more on idiom:
In the first question, split between D and E is "assist in doing" H blablabla, assisting flies in distinguishing their own species from others. (there are also other defects in E - "those of" no antecedent )
In the second question,  studies have led doctors to conclude, idiom "lead to". lead doctors to conclude.

What you may ask here is the function of infinitive verb "to do" , which is another broad topic..

第一题是俗语呀 assist sb in doing   第二个是lead sb to do
