求助SC一道题

The gyrfalcon, an Arctic bird of prey, has survived a close brush with extinction; its numbers are now five times greater than when the use of DDT was sharply restricted in the early 1970's.

这道题是正确答案，但是不觉得greater than 后面when前面应该加一些东西吗？
我觉得挺奇怪的。也许可以是its numbers are now five times greater than its numbers when ? 难道就省略掉了？

个人认为是省略了因为比较的是now 和when the use of... 所以its number可以省略没有歧义

这种题目要保证重复的词汇是完全一模一样的，如题中的 "its numbers". 如果是有一点不一样的话，就不可以忽略
