The cause of the wreck of the ship Edmund Fitzgerald in a severe storm on Lake Superior is still unknown. When the sunken wreckage of the vessel was found, searchers discovered the hull in two pieces lying close together. The storm‘s violent waves would have caused separate pieces floating even briefly on the surface to drift apart. Therefore, the breakup of the hull can be ruled out as the cause of the sinking.
Which of the following is an assumption on which the argument depends?
A．Ships as large as the Edmund Fitzgerald rarely sink except in the most violent weather.
B．Underwater currents at the time of the storm did not move the separated pieces of the hull together again.

原文说EF船在风暴中的沉没原因未知。沉船残骸船体分成两半靠在一起。风暴的浪本应该使分开的船体隔开很远。因此船体的分开不是沉船的原因。
B 说水下洋流不会让分开的船体靠拢在一起
不明白为什么会是原文的假设啊？我选的是E

题干中：

前提：风暴会把分裂的船体吹散

推断：沉没在海底的两片船体挨在一起（已知） ---> 两片船体没有被风暴吹散（和前提冲突） ---> 船体没有分裂（至少在风暴进行的时候）

结论：船体的分裂不是船下沉的原因

红色箭头那里其实有另外一种可能：船体分裂了 ---> 被风暴吹散了 ---> 又被海底洋流吹回到了一起

B这个假设正是否定了这个可能。

对于B，取非，就是下面的水，额，就是underwater，会把两半的船弄回一起，也就是否定了原文结果，其中原文结果就是两半不是原因。主要还是取非削弱原文

所以就是说underwater currents不能又吹回到一起（排除了两片船体被风暴吹散又吹到一起的可能）所以两片船体没有被风暴分裂seperate pieces，所以船体不是船下沉的原因。
大概理解了，但是不知道这觉得跟sinking有什么关系。
我当时选了E是感觉跟sinking挂钩。为什么不对呢？求解释~~

船体都分裂了，船当然要沉了吧。。。这文章就是在探索是不是船体断裂导致了沉船。

E. 首先if这种就不能作为假设。其次，E其实想表达的是如果船体分裂后迅速沉入海底，暴风是不能把两片吹散的，所以在海底两个挨在一起也很正常，那么就不能说明船体不是在海面上断裂的。但是注意原文中说暴风可以把两片吹散即使它们只在海面存留了EVEN BRIEFLY，所以就否定了E想说的观点。

Assumption题就是找结论成立的前提，如果不是B那么结论不成立。
