不是大神啊，但是发现没人回答，就现个丑。就你的问题来说其实earned的那句不是独立主格就只是ed分词的从句就近修饰record。不记得那个牛牛说过ed的这类无论有没有，都是就近修饰而ing就会用修饰的问题

Correct Sentence:

By 1940, the pilot Jacqueline Cochran held seventeen official national and international speed records, earned at a time when aviation was still so new that many of the planes she flew were of dangerously experimental design.

逗号后的earned... 都是speed records的修饰语，because it's close to the noun it modifies.

为什么earning不对？如果用v-ing modifier的话，earning的主语就是JC而不是speed records了；并且earning最靠近的是records，试着理解一下"speed records, earning..." 句子意思被曲解了。

这个题的分词可以看作是一个干扰的选项，做这个题的时候看到 time 后面用 when 来连接定语从句即可。 SC 的错误选项中的错误一般都不止一个。。。逗号加动词 ing 的逻辑主语多数时候以分词动力主格考法出现在高分裤中。 08 SC prep 中有很详细的解释。
