I disagree with #2 (“I am not going to learn a lot in my classes at business school.") , 3 (“Fit is not important, when considering schools. I like finance—so I should not likely go to CBS.”), 4 (“Schools don't want me to change the world. They want me to get a job.") and 6 ("Essay questions don't matter")- that's almost half.
I applied expecting (and saying) the #1 thing I wanted to do was to learn from classes; that I applied to Lauder and nowhere else because of fit; that I wanted to make an impact and not worry about getting a job (at most, I'd create my own job); and with a lazor-like focus on answering exactly what the questions were asking and nothing else.
In fact, re: #6, the adcom at Lauder always tells me that >80% of the applicants are qualified to go to the programme. The easiest dings are those who don't answer the question.-- by 会员 jelt2359 (2010/12/6 10:57:55)
Hey there! Thanks for the thoughtful responses. Id be happy to help you better understand the parts of the presentations you have brought up of course. Take another look though at the sections you are “disagreeing” with—I think you’ll find that you are misreading some of our material dude! J Feel free to reach out to me personally if you’d like to chat more of course. And while I was at HBS, I also thought (at the time) that I was learning stuff in class that would change my life. I loved my classes also! But now five years later, it has become clear that the classes were the LEAST valuable piece of bschool. And all my HBS classmates talked at length about this in our 5-year reunion. But again, while I was at school, I didn’t yet have the benefit of that perspective… Regarding your comment re:#6 of course we agree with you dude! It is critical to answer the questions. We couldn’t agree with you more. Again, that is not the point of the slide. The point of the slide is that as you answer all the questions, be sure that you are telling your best stories. Nobody (I hope!) would ever say that any applicant should not answer the questions—that of course is not our point. All we are saying is that you need to tell your BEST stories.   eriod. That is the real art of the MBA application process—telling your BEST stories, AND answering the questions—both at the same time. If you can do both of these things, you’ll be in business. Wahoo! But if you only do one of em, you’re in TROUBLE. Sorry if that wasn’t so clear to you my man—feel free to reach out to me personally if you’d like. Id be more than happy to help explain further. Good luck to you my friend!
