Personnel officer: The exorbitant cost of our health-insurance benefits reflects the high dollar amount of medical expenses incurred by our employees. Employees who are out of shape, as a group, have higher doctor bills and longer hospital stays than do their colleagues who are fit. Therefore, since we must reduce our health-insurance costs, we should offer a rigorous fitness program of jogging and weight lifting to all employees, and require employees who are out of shape to participate.

The conclusion reached by the personnel officer depends on which of the following assumptions?

Q27:

Personnel officer:  The exorbitant cost of our health-insurance benefits reflects the high dollar amount of medical expenses incurred by our employees.  Employees who are out of shape, as a group, have higher doctor bills and longer hospital stays than do their colleagues who are fit.  Therefore, since we must reduce our health-insurance costs, we should offer a rigorous fitness program of jogging and weight lifting to all employees, and require employees who are out of shape to participate.

The conclusion reached by the personnel officer depends on which of the following assumptions?

  1. A person who is fit would receive a routine physical checkup by a doctor less regularly than would a person who is out of shape.
  2. The medical expenses incurred by employees who are required to participate in the fitness program would be less than those incurred by employees who are not required to participate.
  3. The strenuous activities required of out-of-shape employees by the program would not by themselves generate medical expenses greater than any reduction achieved by the program.
  4. The fitness program would serve more employees who are out of shape than it would employees who are fit.
  5. The employees who participate in the fitness program would be away from work because of illness less than would the employees who do not participate.

   Answer:

answer is c, i vote b. why c ?

C is right b/c it says that the net medical expenses would be less than now.

B would be right if we change it to:

The medical expenses incurred by employees who are required to participate in the fitness program are
more than those incurred by employees who are not required to participate.

or:

The medical expenses incurred by employees who are required to participate in the fitness program would be less than those incurred by them now.

B would be right if we change it to:

The medical expenses incurred by employees who are required to participate in the fitness program are
more than those incurred by employees who are not required to participate.

or:

The medical expenses incurred by employees who are required to participate in the fitness program would be less than those incurred by them now.

(A)medical expenses high -> exorbitant cost

(B)out-of-shape -> medical expense high

(C)fitness program -> reduce medical expense

can someone explain about the meaning of C please~

i know b is wrong. but still don't get what is C trying to say...

Therefore, since we must reduce our health-insurance costs

Employees who are out of shape, as a group, have higher doctor bills and longer hospital stays than do their colleagues who are fit.

B:The medical expenses incurred by employees who are required to participate in the fitness program would be less than those incurred by employees who are not required to participate.

B 说的是所有雇员,不是out of shape的雇员。

“B:The medical expenses incurred by employees who are required to participate in the fitness program would be less than those incurred by employees who are not required to participate.

B 说的是所有雇员,不是out of shape的雇员。

因为题目说了,we should offer a rigorous fitness program of jogging and weight lifting to all employees, and require employees who are out of shape to participate.

从这里可以看出来,employees who are required to participa 就是这些out of shape的员工,不存在8楼说的 “对象范围不一致”的问题。

B根本就没有涉及到这两者之间的关系,只是比较“被要求参加的员工”VS“不被要求参加的员工”,无关;

而且B违反了原文提供的信息“ Employees who are out of shape, as a group, have higher doctor bills and longer hospital stays than do their colleagues who are fit.
