请问这段话是什么意思啊？

这段grafting ..onto..应该是属于these differences中的一个difference，还是应该理解为对前面两种difference的一个总结呢？最后一段贴出来。。。请教各位大拿。。。

The early trading companies did differ strikingly frommodern multinationals in many respects. They depended heavily on the nationalgovernments of their home countries and thus characteristically acted abroad topromote national interests. Their top managers were typically owners with asubstantial minority share(minority share: 少数股份), whereas senior managers’ holdings in modernmultinationals are usually insignificant. They operated in a pre-industrialworld, grafting a system of capitalist international trade onto a pre-modernsystem of artisan and peasant production. Despite these differences, however,early trading companies organized effectively in remarkably modern ways andmerit further study as analogues of more modern structures.

第三段是说了早起和modern的differ in three respects：早期的贸易公司1 depend heavily on G; 2 top managers --share; 3grafting a system 早期的贸易公司嫁接了国际资金贸易系统在手工小农生产上，所以modern multinational corporation 没有嫁接那个玩意
