14) The following appeared as part of an article in a business magazine.
A recent study rating 300 male and female Mentian advertising executives according to the average number of hours they sleep per night showed an association between the amount of sleep the executives need and the success of their firms. Of the advertising firms studied, those whose executives reported needing no more than 6 hours of sleep per night had higher profit margins and faster growth. These results suggest that if a business wants to prosper, it should hire only people who need less than 6 hours of sleep per night.
Write a response in which you examine the stated and/or unstated assumptions of the argument. Be sure to explain how the argument depends on these assumptions and what the implications are for the argument if the assumptions prove unwarranted.
In this article, the author considers that there is a relation between the amount of sleep and the success of a company. What is more, this author argues that in order to keep high profit of a company, the boss should only hire those employees who need to sleep 6 hours or less per night. However, some assumptions that the author made are less convincing.
Based on the result of a recent study, the author deduces that there is a negative correlation between sleeping hour and the success of the company. The author is assuming that the result of this study is convincing enough. However, with a number of information about this study still remains unclear, we should rethink about if the result of the study is credible.Though this study includes both male and female, no information shows the proportion of sex ration.Besides, no specific evidence tells us anything about the age group of those people who are involved in this study. What is more, their health condition remains unknown.Since the sleep hour is less likely to be the only factor that has an effort on the working performance, the author should put more evidence into his or her consideration.
Even though the result of this study is convincing, it is unfair to relate the performance of a company to a kind of people who just sleep 6 hours. The author seems to infer that those who sleep 6 hours a day would make great contributions to the success of a firm. However, this is less likely to be true. Those people who need less sleep per day have more time than other people and they can do more things than others, but that have no direct relation with their work performance.Perhaps those people who need less sleeping hours put much of their time to play video games or watch TV, instead of extra hours of working. Maybe a person who need less sleep does put more hour on work, but his poor working skill never guarantee that he is going to do more work than others. No evidence shows that the relationship between the sleep hours a person need and his or her work ability.
By assuming that hiring people who need 6 hours or less sleep per day, the author means that this is the only factor to lead a success company. However, the success of a company is a complex task.Actually, many factors work together to make this achievement but it is less likely to be the out come of a single reason. For example, an outstanding leader is likely to make great contribution to the success of a firm.To make wonderful profit, team work is also important. We could hardly any see a company whose staff quarrel with each other all the time and have no team work win a fantastic cash flue.To enhance working efficiency, workers need skills and experience. If a company does not have these things but only staff who are able to sleep less than 6 hours a day, it is less likely to make success.
To sum up, this argument is based on poor assumption instead of an objective view.In order to make the argument more convincing, the author needs to do more research. What is more, that author need to put more factors into his or her consideration.
