复数名词前通常不需要定冠词，但表独一无二及其他一些特殊事物的名词前必须加定冠词，pole 本身要加定冠词。与单复数无关。你可以查一下必须加定冠词的名词有哪些。

另外有一些表独一无二的名词可以加定冠词也可以不加，比如earth.

on earth 和on the earth都正确。
