3 Educational institutions have a responsibility to dissuade students from pursuing fields of study in which they are unlikely to succeed.
Write a response in which you discuss the extent to which you agree or disagree with the claim. In developing and supporting your position, be sure to address the most compelling reasons and/or examples that could be used to challenge your position.
The speaker claims that educational institutions should disabuse students from pursuing what they are unlikely to succeed. Though it is the duties of educators to guild and mentor students to success, the speaker miss the essence of education, which is to encourage and inspire. In that sense, educators should not interfere the students when they are deciding what study to pursue. The reason why the speaker’s assertion seems plausible is that one of the duties of educators is to guild and mentor, even to admonish and criticize when needed. Educators are far more experienced than students, and they might have a better view of a student’s advantages and their advice might help students to short circuits some obstacles to success. That is the reason why we meet career consultants in senior year of high schools and why colleges held entrance exams to select students. Consider a student with no talent in art being rejected by Julliard, perhaps at first this might be a blow. However, in the long run, this would dissuade him from a career path which he might not have any hope of success and might probably end up in a hopeless condition. In such extreme cases, educational institutions do play a fair role in the best interest of the development of students. However, another important function of education, encouragement makes it important for educators to bear in mind that they should respect the will and interest of the students and should not interfere them. For one thing, it is possible that they are aware some characteristics of an individual student, but it is almost impossible for them to know everything about that student, including his talent, his personality, his experience as a kid and so on. Since the direction of study and career path is influenced by so many factors, only the students themselves are in the best place to make such decisions. Once the students have made that decision, educators should do everything in their power to encourage them on that path. Whether the students would be outstanding in that field or not, it’s the process of pursuing that counts. And during that process, encouragement from educators means a lot. Furthermore, regarding a higher feature of education, inspiring, dissuading students from unpromising studying fields is not only unwise, but also impossible at times. Since some students are so innovative that they pursue studies in new fields that they create themselves. In that scenario, both the students and educators know little about that field. If the educators don’t have a clear picture of a certain study field, it would be unjustifiable for him to dissuade anyone from pursuing it. Consider Albert Einstein, who pointed out that time would reverse if one travels as fast as light. This theory looks absurd since time travelling has not been considered possible except for in science fiction. If Einstein’s mentor dissuaded him from pursuing that path, he might not be successful and eminent as he is now. Basing on these facts, educational institutions should be even more cautious when they are trying to dissuade students from something that they don’t know and something that seems impossible. Keeping their hands off the case may be their best position. In the final analysis, though the speakers claim that educational institutions should guild students away from unpromising study fields holds true in some extreme cases, it is best for educators not to intervene the student’s decision, due to the encouraging and inspiring function of education. |
