Personal Statement
I recall my first attempts at lab experiments and how inept I felt in my feeble efforts to master the simplest of procedures. I never seemed to have enough time to prepare and, with spilled samples, a broken flask and three stitches as the result of that day, my task seemed the more difficult to achieve. While I no longer find myself rushed in my experiments, I spare no effort in refining procedures that lead to a more efficient use of my time —this is my style, always pushing myself to the limit.
My undergraduate years have prepared me well. After graduated from the best high school in my hometown, Shanxi Province, I entered T University to continue my education. It is one of the top 15 universities in China, and the School of Pharmaceutical Science and Technology, which I entered, has a good reputation in the field. The undergraduate studies equipped me with a wide range of knowledge on pharmaceutical sciences and chemistry and experimental skills as a preparation for future advanced research. In addition to my comprehensive studies in my major field, I received as well extensive training in mathematics and computer science, both of which were of great benefit to my study. This training is an excellent first step in preparing for the professional career that I desire. With my hard work, I was ranked top 5 in my school and was recommended for admission to graduate school in T University.
I believe theoretical knowledge runs parallel with applied experimentation. The educational environment in our College provides both opportunities and facilities for putting into practice the theories learned. In my sophomore year I spent all my Fridays in the chemical or biological lab. There, I was taught the fundamental skills in pharmaceutical, like how to synthesize simple compounds (aspirin, barbital, etc.) and how to use basic analytical instruments (UV-vis spectrophotometer, HPLC, etc) in chemistry lab while also learned how to dissect mouse, cultivate bacteria and culture animal cell in biological lab. On completing one experiment, I would spend the following weekend in the library, searching materials for the next experiments. Very early in my studies, I learned much from this ‘independent’ approach and I realized that to be a successful researcher one needs above all, skills in design and analysis.
What’s more, with the decreasing in courses and increasing spare time, I applied to work in Prof. W’s lab (Pharmaceutical Analysis) in October 2009 as a senior undergraduate student. At first I worked asa research assistant for the project “Determination of Melamine in the dairy products” to detect and regulate melamine in a local dairy company’s products. In this fundamental research, I realized that honesty and diligence, as personality to detail, should be the foremost principle concerned. Team-work spirit and how to acting as a good planner also play important roles. As for my dissertation for bachelor degree, I worked on an independent project entitled “Preparation and Functionalization of GMA-DVB Polymers” by suspension polymerization. With suitable functionalization, the prepared material turned out to a kind of good qualified solid phase extraction (SPE) packing material. Since then, I grew great interest in nano-science and material chemistry.
From September 2010, I continued my study as a MSc graduate student in the same lab. My research project was focused on preparation and application of nano-scale materials. I took part in the project entitled”The Construction and Evaluation of Cells Separation System Based on Rotating Magnetic Field” (Natural Science Foundation of China, *******) and my job was to prepare suitable magnetic particles as the separation materials. Besides working on the preparation of magnetic beads, Ag nanoparticals, Au nanoparticals, polystyrene particles, etc, my main research is “Preparation of Gold-Magnetic composites and the Application in Catalyzing Nitro-Compound in Liquid Phase”. In my research, I chose gold colloids, whose size and surface could be controlled before their deposition on the support, as the precursor to prepare supported gold catalysts and to avoid Au NP aggregation in the process. First, I prepared different kinds of Au NPs and selected those who with great durability in extreme acid/alkaline condition for the further steps. When it came to prepare gold-magnetic catalysts, I developed a new method of preparing gold-magnetic composite microspheres. Results from this research showed that the composites had a sphere shape and Au NPs were well dispersed and fixed in the matrix. This method solved gold leakage problem appeared in others and is also facile and economical. Then I applied the gold-magnetic composites in the reduction of p-nitroaniline in aqueous solution to evaluate its catalytic ability. Its specific activity reached 106.19mmol/(min?g) and specific conversion was 99.8%. Now I applies this synthesized gold-magnetic catalysts to other reaction to test its wide suitability and applicability. This small achievement gives me not only confidence for the future research but also strong determination to pursue higher level in the field of nano-science and material chemistry.
However, in the pursuit of one’s goals I have always believed one should always strive to achieve a well-rounded preparation, not only intellectual but also social. Therefore, off-campus activities also inspired me to cultivate capacities of leadership, cooperation, and innovation. I’ve been working as a technical engineer in T Centre since September 2010. This job taught me technical knowledge on routine analysis instruments as well as the concept of thinking one-step ahead and one-step further in the work. Meanwhile, I’m the monitor in my class and used to be the chairman of “Deng Xiao-ping Theory and Three Represent’s Important Thought Research Association” in my school. These experiences enhanced my communicating, organizing, and executing skills. What’s more, I’m also a volunteer in my neighborhood community to publicize the importance of blood donation. And I myself am a voluntary blood donor. Furthermore, as I believe that science may exhibit greater vitality when it combines related subjects together. Interdisciplinary concept may provide inspiration and creativity for each participant while combination of several related areas of chemistry will make students broad-minded and skilled. That is right the reason for my preference to the chemistry department in the university of **** who is a highly respected one in academia and an ideal place for ambitious youth to learn and create. By taking advantage of the relative subjects, like structure calculation, statistics, we will find new applications applied in analytical chemistry.My goal, just as your objective goes, is tokeep mind open to the cutting edge sciences. I am eager to study and research in the field of nano-science and material chemistry in your department. With your updated curricula and interdisciplinary areas of knowledge, I hope to develop myself into a competent professional, and make contributions to chemistry in the world. In turn, being enthusiastic, cooperative and hardworking, I am confident enough to be a qualified and potential graduate student to continue my study in your department and I hope I will have the opportunity to do so.
