42) Students should always question whatthey are taught instead of accepting it passively. Write a response in which you discuss theextent to which you agree or disagree with the statement and explain yourreasoning for the position you take. In developing and supporting yourposition, you should consider ways in which the statement might or might nothold true and explain how these considerations shape your position. During the process of learning, studentsare frequently admonished to cultivate themselves to be critical. Controversysurrounds the question of whether students should always question what isinstilled into them rather than accepting it passively. In my perspective, critical thinking is assuredly conducive to students' judgment about knowledge;however, it is unjustifiable for them to question everything they are taught inview of limited time and energy. Admittedly, the spirit of questioningauthoritativeness is significant for either individual or social development. For a student, who acts as an individual, the construction of critical thinkingmay lead to personality, independence and little inclination to gullibility. Atsocial level, it is also this spirit that trusts development of science, humans' recognition of the world and technology. For supporting example oneneed see no further than Copernicus, who was persistent to question theprevailing accepted theory of Earth-centered, and built up Sun-centered theory. It is more likely that without question there would be no headway for the wholepeople. Therefore, as a student, it is surely significant to retain a mind ofquestion. However, it is impractical for students toquestion whatever they encounter without any evidence or proof. Question iseffective when there is some basis upon which it can be built on. If thequestion cannot persuade anyone, it means nothing; but if students want todemonstrate what they believe in is right, materials must be provided tobuttress their ideas. What's more, it is also futile to question always, considering either limited time or energy, which is necessary for theirpreparation for the proof. As Aristotle, the ancient Greek philosophermaintained, the nature of education involves nature, reason and habit. Ifstudents question things without reason, it cannot be meaningful. Therefore, it is obviously necessary for astudent to utilize their time and energy reasonably to judge what can beaccepted as it is, and what should be opposed to and pick up evidence tosupport their perspectives. The prerequisite for this is merely thinking beforethey accept it, which is also the basis for question. On balance, critical thinking can benefitstudents, even the entire society; however, questioning everything they aretaught is unwise and impractical. What students should learn is to think beforeaccepting, then judge, and finally demonstrate themselves when necessary. |
