老观点 believed that the brain was Independent关键词 of metabolic processes occurring elsewhere in the body. In recent新观studies, however转折, we have discovered that the production and release (5) in brain neurons of the neurotransmitter serotonin (neurotransmitters arecompounds that neurons use to transmit signals to other cells) depend directly on(关键词与once观点形成对比) the food that the body processes.
Our first实验一studies sought to determine whether (10) the increase in serotonin关键词observed in rats given a large injection of the amino acid tryptophan might also occur after rats ate meals that change tryptophan关键词levels in the blood. We found that结论, immediately after the rats began to eat, parallel (15) elevations occurred in blood tryptophan, brain tryptophan, and brain serotonin levels. These findings suggested进一步确定,可略读 that the production and release of serotonin in brain neurons were normally coupled with blood-tryptophan increases. In later实验二studies we (20) found that injectinginsulin关键词into a rat’s bloodstream also代表方向没变 caused parallel elevations in blood and brain tryptophan关键词levels and in serotonin关键词levels. We then递进下一步decided to see whether the secretion of the animal’s own insulin关键词similarly方向 affected serotonin production. (25) We gave the rats a carbohydrate-containing关键词meal that we knew would elicit insulin secretion. As we had hypothesized,递进代表方向,后略读the blood tryptophan level and the concentrations of tryptophan and of serotonin关键词in the brain increased结论状态 after the meal.

(30) Surprisingly, however,转折,将提出另外观点when we added a large amount of protein关键词to the meal, brain tryptophan and serotonin levels fell. Since protein contains tryptophan, why should it depress brain tryptophan levels?问题 The answer解答lies in the mechanism that (35)provides blood tryptophan to the brain cells. This same mechanism also解答的继续provides the brain cells with other amino acids found in protein, such as举例首字母提炼 tyrosine and leucine. The consumption of protein increases blood concentration of the other amino acids much (40) more, proportionately, than it does that of tryptophan. The more protein is in a meal, the lower is the ratio of the resulting blood-tryptophan concentration to the concentration of competing amino acids, and the more slowly is tryptophan provided to the brain. (45) Thus结论the more protein in a meal, the less serotonin subsequently produced and released.

Oncebrain independent metabolic

Recent: brain depend on

First study: t+>s+(t: tryptophans secretion

i +> t+, s +(i:insulin)

however,p+> t-, s-due to t/other amino acid -(pproteint与其他氨基酸的比例降低)
