An overly centralized economy, not the changes in the climate, is responsible for the poor agricultural production in Country X since its new government came to power. Neighboring Country Y has experienced the same climatic conditions, but while agricultural production has been falling in Country X, it has been rising in Country Y.
Which of the following, if true, would most weaken the argument above?
22. In 1992, a major newspaper circulated throughout North American paid its reporters an average salary paid by its principle competitors to their reporters. An executive of the newspaper argued that this practice was justified, since any shortfall that might exist in the reporters’ salaries is fully compensated by the valuable training they receive through their assignments.
Which one of the following, if true about the newspaper in 1992, most seriously undermines the justification offered by the executive?
A. Senior reporters at the newspaper earned as much as reporters of similar stature who worked for the newspaper’s principle competitors. B. Most of the newspaper’s reporters had worked there for more than ten years. C. The circulation of the newspaper had recently reached a plateau, after it had increased steadily throughout the 1980s. D. The union that represented reporters at the newspaper was different from the union that represented reporters at the newspaper’s competitors. E. The newspaper was widely read throughout continental Europe and Great Britain as well as North America. 这题题目是什么意思。答案也不知道要选什么。
你这道题是不是打错了,应该是paid its reporters an average salary lower than that paid by its principal,这样应该就理解了吧, 这家报社付的薪水比竞争报社的少,还说是合理的,因为虽然钱少了点,(shortfall that might exist in the reporters's salaries), 但是因为给他们提供了valuable training through assignments所以他们也得到补偿了。 问的是削弱
(A) Industrial production also is declining in Country X. (B) Whereas Country Y is landlocked, Country X has a major seaport. (C) Both Country X and Country Y have been experiencing drought conditions. (D) The crops that have always been grown in Country X are different from those that have always been grown in Country Y. (E) Country X's new government instituted a centralized economy with the intention of ensuring an equitable distribution of goods. 这题从哪里入手?
In the years since the city of London imposed strict air-pollution regulations on local industry, the number of bird species seen in and around London has increased dramatically. Similar air-pollution rules should be imposed in other major cities. Each of the following is an assumption made in the argument above EXCEPT: (A) In most major cities, air-pollution problems are caused almost entirely by local industry. (B) Air-pollution regulations on industry have a significant impact on the quality of the air. (C) The air-pollution problems of other major cities are basically similar to those once suffered by London. (D) An increase in the number of bird species in and around a city is desirable. (E) The increased sightings of bird species in and around London reflect an actual increase in the number of species in the area. 这题怎么会选a呢?我觉得应该是e
E is definitely an assumption. Otherwise, one of the premise is wrong.
A, on the other hand is, not necessary. There are many causes of air polution: exhaust gas from cars, local industry, weather patterns, etc. In the case of argument, whether the air pollution is caused entirely by the local industry or not, the author still thinks more strict regulations would help.
