Hello my friend. Yes, I agree with you 100%. This is PRECISELY what you would want to write about in your optional essay. Now remember, you want to keep it nice and quick. Three sentences or so, max. erhaps four—but you want to be confident, don’t make excuses, and simply explain the facts of the case. Thanks to everyone for your kindly reply, and I guess this is a tricky one.
After some thought I plan to put these info in my resume / honors section. So instead of tackling with the optional essay beast, I'm really relying on dear adcom reviewers to find out my development since the first 2 years of mediocre performance.
