“It is difficult for people to achieve professional success without sacrificing important aspects of a fulfilling personal life.”
Is it possible that one achieves success in career while enjoying a fulfilling personal life? This issue has been widely discussed recently as the pressure from work has been significantly increased. Although to some extend I agree with the speaker that it is difficult for people to achieve professional success without sacrificing some aspects of their personal life, it is entirely possible that one successes in career while enjoying a fulfilling personal life.
On the one hand, I have to admit that it is getting harder for people to have a satisfying personal life and a successful career at the same time. Nowadays, cost of living, growing population, increasingly scarce resources… all contribute to a radical competitive society. Such problems are especially serious in developing country where resources are limited and population is exploding. For example, in face of the high degree of inflation in China in 2007, many people have to work extra hours to gain sufficient money to support the family. Moreover, not a small part of employed people are seeking a second employment to beat inflation and remain the former standard of living. Consequently, it is apparent that people are having less time for their personal life.
Furthermore, while more and more techniques, such as telecommuting, are invented to help release the stress from work and spare time, these techniques are actually eating away at our leisure time. Close study reveals that the development of time-saving techniques exacerbates the work intensity. We could find many examples in daily life. As a result of the convenience to communicate on the internet, it is common for one to work late in the night while still going to work during the daytime – the possibility to work at home has become the employer’s excuse to ask employees work overtime. All these evidences demonstrate that the tremendous work is depriving more and more of private time.
However, a successful career and satisfying personal life are not mutually exclusive alternatives. It is possible that one make a balance between work and personal life. There are a variety of time-management skills that enable people make a full use of time. In fact, there are many people who is successful in their career often have a fulfilling private life. Warren E. Buffett, for example, proved to be a miracle in dealing with shares. At the same time he is managed to spend much time with his family and friends and leave plenty of time for his own hobbies. What is more, for some people jobs are combinations of career and personal fulfillment. Some professionals, such as travelers, photographers, artists and so on, truly love their jobs. In these occasions, professional fulfillment and personal fulfillment are one and the same for them.
In conclusion, although it is becoming more and more difficult for people to satisfy both professional and personal fulfillment under the increasing stress from work, people should try to maintain a balance between work and private life. It is still possible to achieve both success in career and a fulfilling personal life.
