It's high but not impossible. A friend of mine who is in Columbia University did intern in NYC Barclay IBD during his junior year's summer and he earned around $20k within 10 weeks. 1.2k to 2.5k should be a fair weekly pay for undergraduate interns from target schools.

corporate一般一个月6~7.5k
IB我听说是10周2万,但有几千的sign on bonus

I know some undergrad interns got prorated salary of $70K with no bonus.
I heard associate intern prorated salary is around $100K plus bonus.

So, it is possible to make $2,500/wk for an MBA working for big IB firms.

It is impossible for a intern to make that much. I lived in US around NY region over 10 years and never heard about such thing. I even asked my friend who works in a mid management position at a top 50 company and is a native American. He said it is impossible for a intern to be paid that much in any company in US. Your parents' friend may exaggerate or your parents heard wrong.

如果是投行或者PE/HF的Associate职位的实习，完全可能，因为这里就是把第一年Associate的工资换算成周薪来付的。但这个一般是针对MBA的
如果本科，恐怕不大可能

另外，针对楼上几位朋友——俺当年也对一些类似的帖子发出了绝不可能收入这么高的判断。后来随着阅历增长，才发现确实有些行业的起薪很高。除了上面提到的金融中的一些领域外，律师、管理咨询也都是高薪行业
这些都是可以靠自身努力有机会进入的行业，当然背后的汗水和辛苦只有自己知道
