[讨论]GWD32 32-34(大家讨论啊!)

GWD32—32-34

The dry mountain ranges of the

western united states contain rocks

dating back 440 to 510 million years,

Line    to the Ordovician period, and teeming

1)          with evidence of tropical marine life.

This rock record provides clues about

one of the most significant radiations

(periods when existing life-forms gave

rise to variations that would eventually

10) evolve into entirely new species) in the

history of marine invertebrates. During

this radiation the number of marine

biological families increased greatly,

and these families included species

15) that would dominate the marine ecosys-

tems of the area for the next 215 million

years. Although the radiation span-

ned tens of millions of years, major

changes in many species occurred

20) during a geologically short time span

within the radiation and, furthermore,

appear to have occurred worldwide,

suggesting that external events were

major factors in the radiation. And , in

25) fact, there is evidence of major eco-

logical and geological changes during

this period: the sea level dropped

drastically and mountain ranges were

formed, in this instance, rather than

30) leading to large-scale extinctions,

these kinds of environmental changes

may have resulted in an enriched pat-

tern of habitats and nutrients, which in

turn gave rise to the Ordovician radi-

35) ation, However, the actual relationship

between these environmental factors

and the diversification of life forms is

not yet fully understood

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Q32

The passage is primarily concerned with

1)      evaluating the evidence of a major geo

logic period and determining its duration

2)      describing an evolutionary phenomenon

and speculating about its cause

3)      explaining the mechanisms through which

marine life-forms evolved during a particular period

4)      analyzing the impact on later life-forms of

an important evolutionary development

5)      contrasting a period of evolutionary

change with other such periods

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Q33

which of the following can be inferred from

the passage regarding the geological changes

that occurred during Ordovician period?

1)      They were more drastic than those

associated with other radiations

2)      They may have created conditions

favorable to the evolution of many

    new life-forms

3)      They may have caused the extinction of many

    of the marine species living

    in shallow waters

4)      They may have been a factor in the

Development

of new species adapted

to living both on land and in water .

5)      They hastened the formation of the

extensive dry regions found in the

western united states

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Q34

which of the following best describes the

function of last sentence of the passage ?

1)      it points out that the events described

in the passage may be atypical

2)      it alludes to the fact that there is dis

agreement in the scientific community

over the importance of the Ordovician

radiation

3)      it concludes that the evidence presented

in the passage is insufficient to support

the proposed hypothesis because it

comes from a limited geographic area

4)      it warns the reader against seeing a

connection between the biological

and geological changes described in

the passage

5)      it alerts the reader that current knowledge

   cannot completely explain the relationship

suggested by the evidence presented

in the passage

My answer is 32.C 33.B 34.E

No.32 I have seen the given answer to be B

But I thought the passage does not provide the cause of the Ordovician period!

Open to discuss~~

By reviewing the answer again, i found B is more reasonable. If you pay attention for the Hightlight part (blue & purple) you could see the article did discribe two parites : discrib a phenomenon and later try to find the reason(but ofcourse, it didn't get the answer yet )  C is wrong , because there is nowhere in the article to explain the mechanisms of the marine life-forms. Refer back to the article we could only see the author mention the phenomenon of the marine life (they increase greatly during a specific period). But since the author doesn't know the reason why the life phenomenenon could related to the evolutionary nature enviornment change , ofcourse he could not "explain" to you the "machanisms "

我也觉得应该是B. speculate意思是推测,下面这两句都表明了作者推测外部事件是造成radiation的原因。

'suggesting that external events were major factors in the radiation' '

these kinds of environmental changes may have resulted in an enriched pattern of habitats and nutrients, which in turn gave rise to the Ordovician radiation. '

另外,33题为什么选E不选B呢?

顶起来,我的答案也是B,B,E,

GWD-TN版给的答案是C,E,E,那叫一个晕啊~~~

就快考了,望大家讨论,多谢
