The enumeration of the rivals requires the conjunction and'. either the rivalry between x and y or the rivals x and y, the rivalry that develops between x and y. Choices A and D wrongly substitute with for and in the first paradigm; choice B wrongly substitutes against for and in the second. Choice E does not clearly state that Chancellor is party to the rivalry. E also awkwardly pairs Chancellor and rivalry, not Chancellor and Ransom, as antecedents of they. 哈哈，那个大牛应该再补充一句：如果其他选项都有致命错误，而多的动词又不影响句子的表达，多就多吧。

我们是优选答案，而不是选绝对正确和简洁的。

本句中没有develop也没错；相反更简洁，不过其他答案都错，只有选C

可是我觉得加上是否读起来更好。因为RIVALRAY 是一种竞争状态，加上更准确吧？

我又再看了这一题，觉得大大有问题，但站上就仅仅这一帖，相当意外

回到主题，透过between A and B，这一题可以清楚解出C，这点没问题

但回到原句

217. The plot of The Bostonians centers on the rivalry that develops between Olive Chancellor, an active feminist, and Basil Ransom, and cynical cousin when they find themselves drawn to the same radiant young woman whose talent for public speaking has won her an ardent following.

仔细分析，特别是由句意来看，发现问题很多，第一个her (her charming....) ，指的是Olive Chancellor这没问题，很清楚。

接下来句子出现when they find themselves...这里的they我想应该是指Olive Chancellor与Basil Ransom，看来问题也不大

但问题出在最后，has won her an ardent following....这个her又是指谁呢，实在是找不到指代的对象，总不会是Olive Chancellor本人吧。而且，既然句子里提到Olive是个女人，又怎么会对其他女人的光采，而要和自己的cousin决斗呢，难不成是Olive是同性恋

这一题就句意来说，真的不好理解，请大家给点意见吧。

这个问题我早就在苦恼，跟别人讨论半天，还不被认同，很生气，现在极其高兴看到这帖。

那三女人的关系，确实也不如两男一女那么说得通，两个思路，

1，如果第一个her是his, 那便万事大吉。

2，三女人三角友谊也勉强可以，但是has won her an ardent following....这个her我认为按照句意是指the radiant woman, 则与第一个her指代不一致，ETS在这里犯了它自己认为不可饶恕的错误。

请朋友们指正。

同意你第二个说法，但是偶觉得也并非是指代上有问题，因为whose talent for public speaking has won her an ardent following是紧跟在the same radiant young woman后用来修饰young woman的定于从句。

还是觉得不清晰，恳请nn指导
