Thanks to the mass media, almost every youngster, irrespective his/her nationality is informed of what the celebrities are doing. Tom Cruise and Katie Holmes finally tied the knot after having a cute baby called Suri, Prince William’s four year girlfriend was invited to the royal Christmas, just to name a few. However, when it comes to the statement that the mass media pay way too much attention on the famous people’s private lives, people’s opinions may vary. As far as I am concerned, I totally agree with the above statement.

The media’s excessive coverage of celebrities’ personal lives has intruded the privacies of these high profile figures as well as made them under tremendous pressures, which may bring about serious mental disease such as depression. In addition, constantly being hounded by the press has made quite a few celebrities resort to alcohol and even drugs to escape from the mounting tensions from reality. Under the extreme circumstances, deaths of some public figures may be attributed, at least in part, to the nosy media. A case in point is presented by the death of the princess Diana. The greedy freelance photographers, who could make a good fortune by selling the princess’s romance pictures, were blamed for chasing the princess’s car at that fateful night and eventually lead to the car crash.

Furthermore, more pressing issues, such as the hunger people in the drought wrecked area, the seemingly uncontrollable spread of AIDS, the ever-expanding ozone holes, are almost never given intensive reports they deserve or simply neglected all together by many news agencies. For example, I happened to notice that one day three years ago(觉得此处不妥,请指教 )when an earthquake at a multitude of seven point five stroke a dense-populate city in the northern part of china, which rendered over a hundred people dead and millions of people injured and homeless. Guess what the headline on that day’s newspapers in some western countries, “Jennifer Aniston and Brad Pitt split”. We have to ponder the question what the responsibilities the mass media should bear besides maximizing the circulation. Should they tirelessly create readers’ interests by appealing to their human craving for gossip and how famous people live? I believe they shouldn’t.

Admittedly, the media’s attentions on the famous people’s personal lives sometimes do benefit our society. This is particularly true with regard to politicians since knowing how they behave in their personal lives will provide voters with the insights needed to judge who is the best candidate for, say, the president of united states. In addition, if the government officials are aware of the fact they are under the scrutiny of the media, they are less likely to do something inappropriate, such as use government vehicles for personal purposes, evading tax.

In sum, while the media’s cover of famous people’s personal lives do generate some positive effects under certain circumstances; the demerits of this practice far outweigh its benefits. On balance, it is safe to say that currently the media’s attention on the private lives of the celebrities has surpassed the appropriate level which already brought tragedies to the celebrities as well as made the public blind to more vital issues.
