"We all experience “ defining moments”, significant events that can have a major impact on our lives. Briefly describe such an event and how it has affected you. "

Before starting to write, it is worth taking a moment to think about what this question is really asking, as well as whtat it is not. A number of applicants make the mistake of equating defining with something heroic or noble and try to describe a moment that fits accordingly. Try not to fall into this trap. Do not try to convince the admissions committee that your defining moment is more spectacular than those of your peers; instead, simply show how one moment or experience has had a significant impact on your development as an individual.

Some defining moments are in fact heroic ( like learning to overcome a disability); if you have such a moment to share --- great! Just make sure to be humble about what happened. On the other hand, do not worry if what you have to offer seems mundane; the specifics of the moment matter a lot less than what you learned from it.

This is your opportunity to tell a story about how you became you. Be brave, Be funny. Be introspective. Be all thouse things if you can, but definitely be honest about how what happened changed who you are. What should you avoid? Being shy,. Reserved writing usually is not good writing, and it certainly will not tell anyone anything profoundly interesting about you. The point: take a chance with the story you choose to tell.
