Both UCL and JHU are well-regarded and highly ranked universities within the UK and the US, respectively, and both have a strong reputation on a global level as well. In general, when picking between UK and US schools of similar rank, the key considerations are: (1) Geographic preference, both during and after your program. We suggest asking both programs to connect you with other Chinese students who are enrolled in or who have graduated from each program so that you can get some first-hand data about what life is like as a student in the UK versus the US, respectively. In addition, it's generally true that graduates of UK schools will have more internship or post-graduate employment opportunities in Europe, whereas graduates of US schools may have more opportunities in the US (although this is subject to visa requirements in both cases). (2) Alumni networks. We encourage you to research the alumni presence of UCL versus JHU in China, so you can gauge how many graduates of each program are currently working in different Chinese cities within your field. (3) Financial considerations. Cost of tuition, cost of living, and the availability of scholarship support are all very legitimate concerns in weighing these options.
