大家来找茬。。。我的第一次,AA008

明天就考了,请大家不要留情,越多越好,多谢了!

8. “The common notion that workers are generally apathetic about management issues is false, or at least outdated: a recently published survey indicates that 79 percent of the nearly 1,200 workers who responded to survey questionnaires expressed a high level of interest in the topics of corporate restructuring and redesign of benefits programs.”

With the attempt of refuting the traditional viewpoint that workers are usually not interested in management issues, the author quoted a recent published survey of about 1200 workers regarding the topics of corporate restructuring and redesign of benefit programs.  At the first glance, the survey seems to be a good evidence of worker's interest in management issues. However, with a careful examination, we'll clearly find out that not any direct association could be drawn between the survey and the worker's actual interests in management issues, even if we could assure that all the workers's resonse are honest and that the data is concise and accurate.

The most critical logical flaw shown in the argument is that the author made the false equation of general management issues with concrete problems. Admitted that issues such as corporate reconstructring and redesign of benefit programs do belong to the concept of management, they are only a part of it. Similiarly, a dog who is interested in finding and eating bones is never considerded a great cook simply because cooking also involves the process of finding and tasting foods. Therefore, it is illogical to conclude that those wokers interested in reconstructing and redesign of benefit programs are interested in management issues as a whole.

Futhermore, a sample of 1200 workers is too small to represent the interest of all workers. Workers are widely distributed in different industries and areas, with a great variation of age, education, gender, past working experience and family background, all of which may affect the survey result. Obviously, by quoting only such a small amount of samples to support the conclusion, the author underestimated the complexity and ignored the difference of point of views among workers. For example, a well-educated worker from a middle class family may display a significant higher interest in corporate management than a literate worker do.

Additionally, the author did not tell us that whether the survey is based on willingness. If it were so, it is highly likely that most of the workers who made response to the questionaires are only those who are more interested in the survey topic --- management issues, compared with their co-workers. This tendancy explains why a high percent of respondees displayed interests in management issues, thus making the suvey results even more unrepresentative.

In conclusion, the author made the false equation of management issues and concrete problems, and failed to provide convincing evidence to undermine the common notion that workers are generally apathetic about management issues.
