Topic 62: What do you want most in a friend, someone who is intelligent, or someone who has a sense of humor, or someone who is reliable? Which one of these characteristics is most important to you? Use reasons and specific examples to explain your choice.
It appears, in so many aspects, very difficult to prefer one to another because all of these characteristics have their own advantages and disadvantages to the extent that it is hard to distinguish.
Yet that does not mean they are of the same to me. To be frank, I would prefer a reliable friend, rather than an intelligent or humorous one, if personal quality is considered as a criterion to choose.
Then why do I prefer a reliable friend? I am in favor of a reliable friend because such a person makes me feel warm and safe. As is known to all, the most essential foundation between friends is trust. Only when people believe in others can they come to develop friendship. Even though a person is intelligent as Einstein and humorous as Chaplin, would you want to be a friend with him when you acknowledge that he enjoys spreading out others’ secrets? Of course not!
Another reason why I choose a reliable friend, instead of a clever one or one with a great sense of humor, is that he can offer me help when I am in trouble. For instance, when a person is depressed and feels extremely horrible, all he wants turns out to be a shoulder to cry, which will be helpful to relieve his stress and sadness. At this moment, a reliable friend, like a rain in time, is really of great importance. No wonder, it brings me more than that I can not get if I choose an intelligent or humorous friend.
Furthermore, reliability is one of the fundamental virtues in our society. Only if people behave reliably, can our world turn out to be a home full of beauty and warmth.
Everybody has his own opinion about this, and for me, taking into account of all factors discussed above, if I am given only one chance of choosing one of the three, a reliable friend seems more perfect.
