Update from John White:
This is usually the time of year when candidates or admitted students begin to gather information from other admitted students or candidates and attempt to figure out how many students some MSBA programs have admitted, denied, or waitlisted. Some students then make incorrect assumptions based upon self-reported feedback and then share incorrect information about programs with other students, which can lead to confusion and chaos for others.
At the Wake Forest MSBA program, our goal for the third cohort of the program has always been 85-90 students with an equal cohort mix of international and domestic (USA) students. That has always been our plan. As with most programs, you also have to admit more than will ultimately enroll, given that some students will apply and accept admission from several programs and then decided at a later date (often late spring) where they ultimately wish to attend. These students will even go so far as to pay enrollment fees at multiple programs to ensure their seat and then forfeit those seats later for another program. This creates challenges for the programs as they design their class cohort, again, meaning they have to admit a larger amount than will ultimately enroll.
Additionally, the Wake Forest MSBA program has experienced a 70% increase in international applicants during the current admissions cycle. This is truly incredible growth and can make admissions that much more competitive to our unique, specialized program. However, all final cohort sizes and enrollment goals are at the discretion of the program.
Strong candidates who applied early in the admissions cycle were most likely to receive a positive admissions decision. Candidates who applied later in the cycle were more likely to be denied due to lower GPAs, test scores, or other application attributes. Even though our international application deadline is 3/1, we still have some candidates submitting applications. Due to our large waitlist, the likelihood of late February candidates being admitted is very low.
We also saw a fair amount of candidates who were unprepared for their Webex interviews and many were also discovered during the interview for reading their answers to questions which had been shared previously by other candidates. This is a dishonest practice for candidates to adopt. Recruiters can tell very quickly if a candidate is reading answers or has prepared answers ahead of the interview, and this can almost always lead to a Deny decision.
Many candidates who interviewed poorly then requested a second interview and blamed it on poor Webex connections. We do not grant second interviews. If they were having technical trouble, they should have stated it during the interview and then it could be re-scheduled. Most importantly, ability to communicate clearly and comprehend English is a major factor in all admissions decisions, too.
I would also encourage candidates who remain on the Wait List to communicate with MSBA program leadership on any updates they have. I have heard from several Waitlist candidates about additional courses they are taking, new internships, or other achievements. All of these updates are then added to their admissions file. We always like hearing from our waitlisted and admitted/deposited students on new developments or achievements.
For those who are reading this and thinking about applying in Fall 2018 for the Class of 2020, I would encourage you to apply in early fall. Thank you. |
