18. “If the primary duty and concern of a corporation is to make money, then conflict is inevitable when the corporation must also acknowledge a duty to serve society.”

From your perspective, how accurate is the above statement? Support your position with reasons and/or examples from your own experience, observations, or reading.

It is a controversial questions whether the primary duty and concern of a corporation is to make money conflicts with its acknowledgement of a duty to serve society. Some people assert that these two factors are contradictory to each other, while others contend that they have some positive relations. In my perspective, the primary duty and concern of a corporation to a great extent conflicts its objective to serve society.

First, company with profit-goal enevitably will boast its products so that customers cannot judge the authentic value of it. For example, many people will complain that they buy something with little value just because the manufacturers boast myriads of advantages of their products on promotion. Therefore, in this aspect, the company's action degrades the trust of the customers.

Second, company pursuing high profits always manufactures the products on the cost of polluting the surrounding area. Take a place in my hometown for instance, the company is reputed for its shampoo brands in the area, but it is also well known for its heavy pollution because all the wastes generated from manufacturing are discharged to the neighboring river. The noise also exerts a negative effect on the study and life of the residents. In this sense, the company greatly does harm to the society.

Third, company pursuing high profits will inevitably takes every effort to reduce its cost. The most direct way is to layoff the current staffs, resulting in the unemployment. The unemployment will finally bring about many other problems such as crime. Thus, it causes the instability of the society.

Of course, we cannot deny that high profits means high tax payment and the government will have more revenue to grant subsidy to those people in need.

From the above analysis, we can clearly judge that the negative effects that pursuing high profits bring to the society greatly outweigh its positive effects, therefore we can reach a conclusion that "if the primary duty and concern of a corporation is to make money, then conflict is inevitable when the corporation must also acknowledge a duty to serve society."
