Simply based on the passage and your comment, the role played by this sentence -- Acquisitions may well have the desirable effect of channeling a nation’s resources efficiently from less to more efficient sectors of its economy, but the individual acquisitions executives arranging these deals must see them as advancing either their own or their companies’ private economic interests -- is that it proposes two possible reasons for the executives to go after an acquisition. 1) their own private economic interest; or 2) their companies' prive economic interests.

E is the correct answer. As I said that the article proposes two possible reasons for the executives to go after an acquisition. 1) their own private economic interest; or 2) their companies' prive economic interests (3rd to the last sentence). Then the second to the last sentence removes the corporate economic interests as the possible reason. Hence the only reason for these executives to go after an acquisition is for their OWN private economic interest.

Answer E "Factors other than economic benefit to the acquiring firm help to explain the frequency with which they occur" is right. Acquiring firm = corporate.
